Tournaments
Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting, a singles or doubles player or aiming for local bragging rights or eyeing national glory, USTA Northern California Tournaments have a spot for you. USTA NorCal tournaments cater to all levels, providing an unparalleled opportunity to enhance your skills and enjoy the camaraderie of tennis.

Tournament Types
USTA NorCal Adult Tournaments come in various formats, ensuring there's something for every player. We've got options based on age, skill level and more. Find the format that suits your style and dive into the action.
NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) tournaments offer players the ability to play tournaments at their appropriate NTRP rating level. NTRP tournaments offer divisions grouped by level (2.5-5.5) and age (18+, 40+, and 55+) and are offered in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. These tournaments may take place over 1 to 5 days but most commonly are held Friday through Sunday. One-day (Level 7) events are a convenient way for league or recreational players to experience the excitement without the weekend commitment. Join in, meet new players, and enjoy the game in a shorter, action-packed format.
Tournaments with an NTRP Gold Cup Series designation are a level 4 tournament.
Players who compete in tournaments with a Tournament of the Year designation will earn Level 5 ranking points.
NTRP tournaments also allow players to work towards advancing to the NTRP National Championships. Players can qualify for the NTRP National Championships via the Grand Prix - the NorCal Season Finale, the NorCal Qualifier, or the National Standings List. For more details about how to qualify for the NTRP National Championships, click here. For more information about the NTRP National Championships, click here.
IMPORTANT:
Any player participating in a USTA NorCal-sanctioned NTRP tournament must have an NTRP rating.
Violating this requirement or playing below the assigned NorCal self-rating level will result in an automatic 30-day suspension. Furthermore, any points earned in that tournament toward the National Standings List and the seeding/tentative/final rankings lists will be promptly removed.
Stay informed, play fair, and let's keep the game respectful and enjoyable for all.
These tournaments are open to all levels and categorized in five-year increments, spanning from 30 to 100. To be eligible for an age division event, players need to hit the minimum age by December 31 of the scheduled starting year for that division. Age Group division players often travel around the country to compete in different tournaments and on different court surfaces, aiming at the coveted Gold Ball won at a National Championship.

Open Division Tournaments are for all USTA players, no matter your skill level or age. They're the toughest adult tournaments out there, attracting former and current pros, teaching professionals, former and collegiate players, NTRP players and top-ranked juniors. It's a straightforward competition where everyone's welcome to bring their A-game.
The top NorCal Open players qualify for the Grand Prix, which is the culmination of the year.

Take the family bond onto the court and compete in a fun and inclusive setting. Family Tournaments consist of divisions like father-son, father-daughter, mother-son, mother-daughter, parent-child, grandparent, grandchild and husband-wife. Note that a parent and child can enter if they're related by blood, legal adoption or current step relationship.
A child can team up with different parents in various tournaments or different divisions within a tournament. In a division with a minimum age requirement for the parent, the parent must reach the minimum age by December 31 of the scheduled starting year for that division. In a division with a combined minimum age restriction, the combined age of the players will reach the minimum combined age for the division by December 31 of the year during which the division is scheduled to start.
Wheelchair tennis stands out as one of the fastest-growing and most demanding wheelchair sports and enhances mobility, builds strength and improves cardiovascular fitness, offering individuals with disabilities the opportunity to engage in activities with both able-bodied and disabled peers and family members. In singles or doubles matches against able-bodied players, wheelchair players get two bounces while their counterparts get one, adding an extra layer of inclusivity.
Northern California hosts a variety of wheelchair tournaments, featuring recreational, competitive, and quadriplegic divisions. Among them is the annual North-South Wheelchair Challenge, a premier event showcasing the rivalry between the top wheelchair players from Northern and Southern California, vying for glory on the court.

Post Season Playoffs and Beyond
USTA Northern California offers various leagues with men's and women's adult, mixed and combo categories leading to championships. At the end of each local league season, teams progress to postseason and championship play.
Playoff Structure: USTA NorCal determines the structure for teams, and the winner is recognized as the Local Area Champion, advancing to Sectional Championships.
Local League Playoffs are the first level of postseason play. Playoffs determine the winning team(s) from each local area.
-
Flights: Flights of five or fewer teams have playoffs with the top two teams; six or more teams have playoffs with the top four teams. In the first round, the top-seeded team faces the fourth-seeded team, and the second-seeded team plays against the third-seeded team. The winners then compete in the second round, with the victor becoming the Local Area Champion and advancing to the Sectional Championships.
-
Scheduling: Captains may agree not to hold playoffs, and matches must be completed by the scheduled deadline. All playoff matches must be completed by the scheduled deadline. If a match is unfinished, USTA NorCal League staff will conduct a draw, weighted to reflect the playoff positions, to determine the winner.
-
EXCEPTION: In leagues with a wild card, if a playoff match isn't necessary for advancement, captains can agree not to play it (2.00D(3)).
-
USTA NorCal encourages all teams to anticipate playing in a playoff round. If a team is unable to participate, USTA NorCal will make efforts to offer the playoff opportunity to another team.
-
-
Sectionals are the next step after the Local League Playoffs.
-
Leagues Advancing Directly: Adult 55, Adult 65, Mixed 18, Mixed 40, and Mixed 55. Smaller levels of Adult 18, Adult 40 and Combo may advance directly to Sectionals as well.
-
Format: Sectionals follow a round-robin and match structure similar to Sectional Championships.
-
Winners: Adult 18, Adult 40, Adult 55, Mixed 18 and Mixed 40 in the fall. Adult 65 section champions advance to a January National Invitational.
-
The winners of Sectionals advance on to National Championships where teams represent NorCal against the 16 other sections in the country.
-
Winners: From Sectional Championships in Adult 18 & Over, Adult 40 & Over, Adult 55 & Over, Mixed 18 & Over, and Mixed 40 & Over.
-
Adult 18, Adult 40, Adult 55, Mixed 18 and Mixed 40 advance to National Championships in the fall. Adult 65 and Mixed 55 Section Champions advance to a National Invitational.
-
Most Sectionals take place on weekends; Sectionals schedule will group Local Area winners into flights which play round robin format, with 3 to 4 team matches over two days (generally, Fri and Sat). Then flight winners, and sometimes wildcards, advance to semifinals and finals (generally, on Sun).
